PLSG RESUSCITATES MONTHLY ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION
After several months of COVID-19 lockdown and restrictions on movement, Plateau State Ministry of Environment has resuscitated the monthly environmental sanitation which is usually observed last Saturday of every month.
Even though the exercise was observed on 3rd of July 2012, the early morning rains affected the much expected level of compliance.
Those who were caught in the web of non compliance blamed it on poor publicity as they claimed they were not aware the exercise would hold.
While monitoring the exercise, The Grassroots Watch noticed defaulters were arrested and prosecuted by mobile courts stationed at different locations within Jos and Bukuru metro.
The Commissioner of Environment Usman Idi who double as the chairman Task force committee comments thus;
"The compliance within Jos and Bukuru metropolis is quite commendable since we have stayed for some time without observing the monthly sanitation, some people may have forgotten about it. Even though in some areas the compliance is zero".He adds that In some areas, banks allowed their ATM to be running and that contributes to non compliance and in some areas tricycles were seen going about their normal business.
" I want to call on their unions to take note of that, like wise the NURT, we saw some of their members going about their business, even though we arrested some and prosecuted them at the same time but we wouldn't want a repeat of that, it is not our making to arrest and prosecute but it has become very necessary where our behaviors are becoming unruly" Idi said.
"We want to appreciate law abiding citizens of Plateau State who came out in numbers to observe the sanitation exercise, to such people we sincerely appreciate them we want to equally call for more cooperation in subsequent sanitation exercise it is our prayers too that what we have started will keep Plateau clean".
The task force committee on sanitation came in with the setting in of the raining season, saddled with the responsibility to clear and evacuate most of the drainages within Jos and Bukuru metropolis, rid the State of waste and indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
