PLATEAU: 2021 BUDGET BREAKDOWN WILL NO LONGER HOLD- COMMISSIONER
This was made known to The Grassroots Watch on Friday by the Commissioner of Budget and Economic Planning Mr Sylvester Wallanko.
Wallanko in an interaction with our reporter during this year's Stakeholders Townhall Meeting on Citizens Engagement in the State's Budgeting Process held at the Azi Nyako Youth Center, Dadinkowa, Jos revealed that the Budget breakdown for this year 2021 based on time lack, events have overtaken it and that is why the state government is not going to do a breakdown as it use to do. Wallanko disclosed.
He explaines that Usually, budget breakdown is supposed to be done immediately after signing the budget into law "but because of logistic problems we were not able to do that immediately and because of the time lack we feel the citizens are already aware of the budget and so there will be no need to do another breakdown but we will publish the budget breakdown in some government papers so that citizens can have access to it. So the issue of breakdown has already been overtaken by events" says Wallanko.
On his assesment of the the townhall engagement , he stated "This year's citizen engagement has been very interesting and encouraging in the sense that we now understand that the citizens are getting more aware of their responsibities as you can see the hall has been filled to capacity, when we had that of Southern and Central zones and now the Northern zone, the halls were filled to capacity which means the citizens are becoming more aware of their responsibities, so it has been a great time having interactions with various communities within these zones".He further revealed that "Plateau State has benefitted from a World Bank grant because we have have been able to meet up with the requirements and what we are doing today is part of the requirements of the world bank. By next week a report of this exercise will be submitted and that will qualify the state to win another grant".
It would be recalled that the state government has over the years gathered journalists in the state to breakdown the budget for public consumption and for proper accountability on governments projected spending for the year in all the MDA's but for this year it would not hold.
